Day 2 -Summer Learning Journey

Activity 1: A House or a Home

Wharepuni is where Maori slept in the 1800s.

Compare my house to wharepuni

Differences:
1. My house is made up of bricks, wood, glasses, cement and a roof.
2. My house is a lot bigger and elegant, modern-looking than wharepuni

Similarities:
1. We sleep in our house together with my family just like wharepuni.
2. Wharepuni and our house today is everybody's home.

Activity 2: The Rules of Engagement

I want to be a Physician-Surgeon. Since when I was a little kid, it's my ultimate dream job, maybe because I'm doing well at school especially at math and science. A Korean series Descendants of the Sun really inspires me to be. There's a main character there, she's a physician-surgeon, she almost spend her life at the operating room but managed to have soldier boyfriend. Now, in real life, that character doctor and the soldier were married last month. Amazing isn't it?

Bonus:

Fried Chicken is my all time favourite. I can eat fried chicken everyday without getting sick of it especially when it's my Uncle Jimmy or my Mama's recipe or it could be from KFC or Jollibee (Fastfood restaurant in the Philippines). My mouth gets watery if I smell their fried chicken.

Day 1 -Summer Learning Journey

Activity 1: The First Settlers

Maori Mythology

Maui and the Giant Fish

Here are some three facts about Maui from the Maori Myth

  1. Maui is known in the people of Hawaiki as the best fisherman.
  2. Based on the myth, Maui's giant fish is now known as the North Island of Aotearoa (New Zealand) while his canoe became the South Island.
  3. Maui is a brave and young man.

I also heard Maui in Moana (a Disney Movie). Maui is a demigod who has a magical hook that can make him transform into different animals, he has many tattoos on his body that resembles all things he have done for the people. In the island of Moana, they caught no more fishes and their coconuts were destroyed, she got an idea of going beyond the shore but his father forbids her. Before her grandmother died, she discovered that they were voyagers, she went beyond the ocean and met Maui, helped each other finding Maui's hook and giving back the heart of Te Fiti to stop the drought.

Activity 2: Setting Sail

If were to ride 'waka' from Philippines to New Zealand, I think I could enjoy the long trip as I'm looking at a beautiful scenery or view of the wide ocean and a bright sky above. As long as I have someone with who knows how to sail waka and a close friend of mine (like Hacel) while watching BTS episodes or streaming live concerts or watching Kdramas with her. I could also enjoy it with lots of foods and snacks, then for a short time, I would also like to dive in to see the underwater and swim (I wish there's now jellyfish or sharks, im afraid of them) and ofcourse, take a lot of pictures, bring my camera with me for memories.

I don't think I can compete Waka Ama race, I easily get tired and don't really have strong arms. If i can ride waka, I will just enjoy it.

Spaghetti and Marshmallow Tower

Aim:
To build the tallest spaghetti and marshmallow tower in class.

Method:

spaghetti

marshmallow

Result:

My group build the tallest tower with 88 cm tall. :)

Walking in Straight Lines

Aim:
I want to find out if we need our senses to walk in straight line.

Hypothesis:
I predict that if you can't see, hear, touch then you can't walk in a straight line, you'll go anywhere, out of no where.

Equipment:

1. Blindfold
2. Cotton wool
3. Bucket

Method:

I'm gonna try walk 200 m in a straight line

Put some cotton wool up your to not smell anything that can hint you where to go.

Put some cotton wool up in your ears to stop hearing the cars

Wear the bucket on your head.

Results:
It feels like I'm a disabled person, I can't see anything but darkness. I can't smell anything. It's like I'm lost in the midst of darkness where no where to go. I tried walking in a straight line but still end up going in slant a bit. I don't know what happened and what I was like, but I'm pretty sure i walked.
