Creative Writing: Arriving in Paradise

From Pit to a Paradise

A new day has started again in London, it is already 1850 and my life hasn’t changed even for a bit, I am just growing up and doing more works. I learned how to live independently as a teen as mother and father died because of a disease in which I don’t know how or why, we lack in education, all I know is they are working very hard for us. I live in a place, like a sardine can, overcrowded, narrow, dirty, slippery, dark streets, we are not getting enough sunlight nor fresh air as the houses are built together side by side and in parallel. Houses don't have windows, furniture, and anything very much. People are not getting clean water for bath, no toilets and wastes go down the street, London in this century I say has a really poor hygiene, good thing I'm a girl with a not so bad immune system. I'm grateful for having a good boss, sometimes, "what a fortunate girl", they say. Though I have a slightly better life, I find ways of saving everything, one drop of water, crumbs of bread, time, etc.

It is sunset, a beautiful sky has appeared by people are not in their homes, children are not playing outside, we are all in factories, working. Sunset doesn't symbolise ending for us. I work as a maid, cleaning my boss' house, sewing, cooking, and they also send me to their factory twice a week.

Moonlight shines, stars twinkling above, is not what you can see in London. Instead, a pitch dark sky, I heard someone call it pollution, I don't know. It's a cold windy night, a paper has appeared before me and hit my face. I went to a place where there's a little light, though I can't read what it says I still can see the picture, it has P-A-R-A-D-I-S-E, it looks amazing for me, a nice scenery picture, at the bottom it says 'ship', I can read that one, dawn morning, and $15. I knew these word because my boss taught me to come to work every day at dawn morning. I felt some kind of weird feeling inside me, I want to go to this place. I have a money for the ship but I decided to just go next year and save more money as I can.

I always check the pier if there's a ship going to the place I saw on the poster, I asked them about the place and I learned that many people have already gone to New Zealand.

It is 1851, London is still the same. I packed my things, just a few, I gave a farewell to my boss and let me go, she even gave me a gift, a beautiful dress. I'm a cabin passenger, I saved enough money to pay for it and even have some leftovers. I saw the steerage passengers and felt horrible, I get to eat nice meals such as steak, soups and milk, while they can only get some biscuits, preserved foods and crowded sleeping place. I got rid of this thought by reading my favourite book, a gift from my mother. Once, I talked to my friends in the steerage and caught a cold from them, luckily the ship has medicines. We have been in the sea for so long, it took 106 days before we arrived in New Zealand.

The day has finally come, a beautiful sea greeted us, I can see that the houses were distant, few people walking, children running along, peaceful, fresh air, and friendly local people. I decided to settle in the North Island. I became an assistant and cleaner in a meat shop with nice pay and fair treatment. No prejudice or exploitation is happening around. I live in a house with other 3 people to pay less for the rental, but at least I have my own room with walls, doors and windows. New Zealand is such a clean place compared back in London. They also have toilets, bathrooms and running water. After 5 years of working, I finally adapted to this new place completely. Then, a miracle has occurred, a programme offered me a scholarship to study. To support my other expenses, I also had to work on a farm, and as an assistant cook in a small eatery.

1884, I graduated from the academy and got a better full-time job as a writer for Publishing Company Ltd. and as a supervisor.  After 5 years, I started my own business, a small unknown clothing boutique in the alley. My first year is stagnant, it started to progress after 2 years. Within these years, I had a teenage boy from an orphanage. My life has changed, getting old and living my life happily. I did not regret my choice of coming to this paradise.

Persuasive Writing: Having Friends is More Important Than Having Money

No Man is an Island

Image result for money or friends
Would you abandon your friend for 1M dollars? ‘Happiness can’t be paid with money’ is a lie, everyone becomes happy when you get your pay, or when buy something you want for a long time makes you really happy. But friends bring happiness for free, just give your time, love and care for each other, the laughter and tears you shared together cannot is priceless.
Having lots of money is useless when you are alone. You need someone, a friend, to enjoy it with. For instance, eating in a restaurant, having lunch alone is boring and doesn’t give any excitement at all but, when you enjoyed it with a friend, you get to talk about the food and everything. Try eating alone today for lunch in school or work and compare it the next day you eat with your friends, it more enjoyable to eat a cheap food with them than eating alone in an expensive restaurant.
A friend is free, money is not. We can earn a friend with trust and being real, money can be gained by working for something. For example, two people were strangers but they started talking the next day, they became close and each now has a new friend, money can’t talk nor hear, though money can make us happy, it also causes anxiety and problems. A businessman is a busy person with lots of money, he can’t sleep properly thinking about financial issues and progress. A group of people having sleepovers, walking together and talking about their problems reduces their anxiety and depression, they have time to eat and laugh. A friend is not a money in which you will use for your own good but a mutual relationship, always there for each other. We can lose friends or money in an instant. Breaking each other’s trust, or spending too much. In our every action there is a reaction, the consequences, so we need to think or our life will sink. Most people today are spending their time earning money for a living if we focus on earning we will run out of time for spending and relaxing. Don’t waste your time in this world earning money. Have some fun with your friends, at least once a week. Remember, wasting time is worse than wasting money.

Composition Techniques

Composing different types of music is what we are currently doing in Music this term. I have learned about identifying genres, instruments, tempo, dynamics and other elements of music. Music is used for advertising, films, or just a song. So far, we created a short piece of songs for films, Christmas and advertisements.

Arranging the tempo is my favourite one, the emotion of music relates to the tempo. If it's fast, it gives an exciting, happy or amazing feeling. If it's slow, it is more like a sad, thrilling, and anxious piece. I love creating music for films, music creates the mood and attracts the viewers, it makes the film more memorable. Christmas jingles are more like a happy and exciting piece, the audience should feel the excitement of Christmas and make them dance to the song.

I might try making my own style of music for my assessment wherein it will show the composer's feelings and story or thoughts.

Persuasive Writing: School is The Best Place To Make Mistakes

School is The Best Place to Make Mistakes

Image result for mistakes

Are you perfect? School is where we learn new things and keep on learning, developing and improving. You might have done something for the first time and by chance, you get it perfectly, but we wouldn't want to live by chance only, right? Before we do something perfectly, we have already done a lot of mistakes, many lose, and misses.

We can't learn how to read if we don't actually read. Reading enhances our vocabulary and shapes our creative minds. For instance, you've read an unfamiliar word and you don't have any idea how to pronounce it, then you said it the wrong way. But remember, it is not the end of the world, you have to options, be discouraged or learn the proper pronunciation.

Students tend to do easier work than the difficult one. For example, taking a math exam, most students will choose the easier level than a harder one because who wants to suffer in maths when you have choices? These students want to get a good score instead of taking the challenge of examining how far they can get up to. My teacher once said that taking a challenging exam and have a couple of mistakes will improve you more than an easy test and have a perfect score. What can 1+1=2 help your learning?

A 10-month-old baby doesn't know how to walk at first, but parents are there to guide the child. He stumbles and fell many times but as he continues to stand up and start taking a step again, the child can now run. Teachers serve as our second parents in school, they help our learning no matter how many times we fail. For example, writing your own name in the primary, you misspelt it or wrote the letter 's' the other way round but, we still hold our pencils and start over and over again until we finally got it right. As a kid, we developed the skill of not giving up. Good thing I didn't get discouraged when I have a piece of paper full of misspelt messy-looking handwritten names.

School is a stair where we start from the very bottom, taking our first little steps. It's a relief we didn't end up staying in the bottom, we learned how to take bigger steps even though we always fall. Do not be afraid of making something wrong. We need to excel, get out of your comfort zone and take risks. Learning is not begging us to be perfect. Cause if you really want to learn, learn how to make and accept your own mistakes.

CARR Licences

CARR Licences? Does it make sense? What is this for?

Well, you can think of it like driver's licence, almost close, but it's definitely free!  Yes, free of charge, HOWEVER, an effort is the pay for it.

Wind Racers Sail

Aim: To build the fastest wind racer out of the supplied materials.

Equipment:
trolley, cardboard, tape, paper, string, metal rod, and scissors

Research:

Remember:
An object in motions stays in motion unless acted upon by an outside force
Every action has an equal and opposite reaction

Physics of Sailing

  • Apparent Wind-the wind you feel on your face as you move forward

  • True wind is the wind blowing naturally

If you were to ride your bike on a day when there is was a 5 mi/hr behind you and you were pedalling at 5 mi/hr, the two winds would cancel each other and you wouldn't feel any wind at all.

There is a positive force against the inside of the sail, and the negative force pulling the outside of the sail.

The air moving across the sails, like air moving across an aeroplane wing, creates a force called the lift. A small amount of this force aims aft and actually pushes the boat forward and some of the force is lost due to friction as it moves over the sail.

Watch this interesting video that will blow your mind!!

Method:

(our design)

1. Measure the parts of your trolley and draw the body parts/design of your vehicle on a piece of cardboard. Make sure that it matches correctly.

2. Cut it out using scissors. You can use a cutter, it will make your life easier.

3.  Cut out 2 pieces of triangle sails, make it big enough for your trolley. Design it first beforehand (only if you want to).

4. Attach the sail to the trolley. Make the sail slightly curved, not straight, so that it will be easier for the wind to act forcefully on its surface. The angle of the sail should be 70-80 degrees.

5. Secure the parts with tape if necessary.

Results:

Our wind racer came pretty well at racing, ours is the last wind racer standing, the rest of the groups' wind racers fell so we have this an achievement tho we didn't come first.

Our DU30 vessel had a distance of 5 metres with the time of 12 seconds (remember that these are my estimated calculations of distance and time). It starts to decelerate after 9 seconds without the wind blower. Therefore, this wind racer has a speed of 0.41 m/s-1.

The Snowman and the Snowdog

This is a short animated movie clip without any dialogue, all you can hear are orchestra-like instruments, more of string and aero-instruments. This film shows a lot of emotions to the audience and the music contributed a lot by setting the mood and drawing the emotions and feelings.

I still did understand the story without dialogue because I saw what happened in the video. The music impacted the emotions and feelings of the viewers. For example, in sad moments, the instruments played slower and in high-pitch, the violin holds the note for a long time to draw it to the hearts of the audience. In happy and exciting moments, the instruments play in a fast beat, imitating a heartbeat when one is happy!

I enjoyed the flying scene a lot, especially when the second voices started to sing, it should be a happy scene but for a particular reason, it made my heart ache it almost made me cry for some time.

Watch the clip yourself and share what you think on the comment box below.
