Environmental Impact of Plastics on Water 'Blog'

Environmental Impact of Plastics on Water

Our extreme love for plastic has reached an undeniable over-consuming level. Discarding, littering, and thus polluting becomes a lethal weapon to our marine biomes. Plastic is light-weight, versatile, strong and relatively inexpensive that makes it irresistible to people. Therefore, this is now a debris in our oceans. Importantly, it is putting every organism in extinction through the food chain.

Common plastics we use that end up in the ocean causes harm. In the Pacific Garbage Patch, 80% of the waste comes from North America and Asia. China and Indonesia are the top sources of plastic bags/bottles-common plastic found in the ocean. Significantly, in 2010, China has an estimated of 8.8 million tons of mismanaged plastic waste and 3.53 million of it became a marine plastic debris. Thinking about it, it’s just from one country. This toxic material we use everyday harms the water bodies, unless, we avoid using single-use plastic bags and disposable bottles we can save our marine life.

North Pacific Gyre-the most polluted ocean in the world. Consuming single-use plastic bags puts our environment into danger. If we don’t act now, you’ll have yourself to blame. Surprisingly, the North Pacific Ocean has an estimated two trillion pieces of plastics that formed the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. Each year, more than 8 million tonnes of plastics enter the ocean. This is like dumping a garbage truck every minute. These plastics break into smaller pieces called microplastics—51 million microplastics, 500 times more than the stars in our galaxy. Aware people can change people’s thoughts about the impacts of plastics.

Water pollution, animals suffer, people complain. When plastic become microplastics, it is easier for the organisms to swallow it. The Food Chain: starting from the tiniest organism—planktons—wherein they are poisoned due to plastic indigestion, this becomes a problem for the larger species that depend on them. Harming more than 800 species, 40% marine mammals and 44% seabirds. We, people, also consume fishes are affected. Mussels and bivalves are eaten whole without removing the gastrointestinal tract. Therefore, it represents a pathway of microplastics to enter the human food chain.

Fatal dangers of plastic in the ocean to every species are growing. Remarkably, toxins from plastic links to cancer, birth defects, immune system problems, childhood development issues, and animal extinction. Ghost-fishing: Birds are tricked by the bright colours of plastics as food. Based on a research, 44% of all seabirds species, along with crustaceans and sea turtles have documented to have plastic debris in/out leading to blockage in the gut, ulceration and suffocation. Learning can change our behaviours of using plastics and littering if we just commit and care for our ocean.

Change is possible for everyone. Being the first to move gives us doubts that is why we are waiting for others to act for us to follow. But this misconception has led us to such pollution: huge debris in the Pacific Ocean and dying organisms. Start today, buy a BPA free tumbler, this saves your money from not buying disposable water bottles every day. Get your eco-bag before going shopping instead of using multiple single-use plastic bags. When we buy something, try not to use plastics. Humans thought that using plastic is very convenient and inexpensive. Think wide and deep. Is it really helping me and everything around?

Why People use Perfume?

9 Reasons!!!

1. Fragrance - number one and common reason. It helps keep unwanted body odour and ensures you smell good all day.

2. Enhances Mood - helps lift your spirits. People wear it to project their mood.

3. Boost Confidence - just like a pretty dress. Ensures that you get through the day without feeling conscious of your body odour. Choose a scent that suits your personality.

4. Makes you attractive - the sense of smell is one of the most important of the five senses. Sometimes, you can get attracted to someone because of the way they smell. Perfumes re rich in pheromones and make you attractive.

5. Aphrodisiac - this explains why you get attracted to someone e.g. by scent

6. Boost Health - (emotional) keeps stress and other anxiety related issues away.

7. Trigger Memories - many women wear their mother's signature scent to revive memories.

8. Aromatherapy - ensures your stress level is in control.

9. Treats Insomnia - for relaxation.

What is a PERFUME?

What is a perfume?
A perfume is a mixture of fragrant essential oils or aroma compounds, fixatives and solvents. It is used to give humans, animals, foods, objects an agreeable scent.

Did you know that perfumery began in ancient Mesopotamia and Egypt and was further refined by the Romans and Arabs? The word perfume derives from the Latin "perfumare", meaning 'to smoke through'.

Tappult Belatehallin was the first perfume maker-and first woman chemist- mentioned in a cuneiform tablet from the 2nd millennium B.C. of Mesopotamia.

Vy Scenté - my own organic perfume brand name. I got the idea from my nickname-to-be which is VY and the word SCENT. I made it sound like the male names "Vincent" or "Vicente". I thought it made it cool :)

Photos of my Perfumes

Yey! Week 3 of Passion Project.

How are you? I did my perfumes. Calling for celebrations. But, we don't have time for that now cause I have a research to do in order to inform everyone about perfumes.

Do you like perfumes? What kind of scent is your favourite? Did you know that your personality and mood can be describe using fragrance? Maybe, we are using perfumes just to look nice and put together. But there's nothing wrong with that.

I have used ethanol alcohol with 95% concentration to determine which is better, organic or synthetic?

Here are my final products. I decorated the bottles last week with washi tape and stickers. Isn't it cute?

Follow my blog about this project to learn more. My research will come up soon < 3

Figurative Languages

Figurative languages, commonly used in novels, poems, and songs, are very useful to help you describe something and easier to understand. This device can improve our writing.

During my middle school years, I've already learned these language features. But this time, it's something different. Our English teacher carefully taught us each of the devices. So far, we have learnt Simile, Metaphor, Alliteration, and Onomatopoeia.

Simile - it is used to compare two things using the words 'like' and 'as'.
e.g. Your eyes are like the stars, shining beautifully.
Yohan is as cool as a celebrity.

Metaphor - almost similar to Simile but, this language feature does not use 'like' and 'as'. This also compares one to another.
e.g. Dogs are superheroes, they make people smile and forget sadness.

Alliteration - a sentence made with the same first letter of the words the same. Rhymes and Alliteration are different, as rhymes have the same sounds at the end of the word.
e.g. Ricky ran in the race for a ring and rice.

Onomatopoeia - the sounds/sound effects you hear. When these onomatopeia words are pronounced, they are the same with the sound you actually heard.
e.g. Bells ring, tomatoes splat, heels tap, phones beep, etc.

Organic Perfume Blog

Making your own perfume. Sounds exciting, right? Indeed. Making your own organic perfume is very beneficial, to you, and to the environment.

A week ago, I started experimenting my formulae and ratios. Since I can only get lavender oil, sweet orange oil, and peppermint oil, my scents are limited. I can't find jojoba oil yet at this point. Distilled water, the answer for the absence of jojoba oil as my carrier oil.

So far, my research has been going well. I am working quickly. Surprisingly, my plans for the next period are being completed before the time. I was about to put my videos and photos but a year * students deleted it so, wait 'till today and I'm going to give you a peek on what I'm doing.

Performance Arts

This year, we had a lot of music projects in Mrs Beer's class. All of them are my favourite, but if I were to choose one, I'd pick the 'Composing My Own'. With this project, I can express reality. Showing the real world, the real feelings, the real you, is very uncommon because we, people, are afraid of prejudice, judgement and comparisons.

What I found challenging this year is being consistent on your work and passion for music. So to incoming year 10 music students, here are some words for you

Music lets us express the real us. Just be yourself, don't be afraid to get out of the shadows. Take one step at a time. Erase those negative thoughts of 'maybe I'll make a mistake', 'they will laugh at me', 'I'm no good at this', 'I'm shy'. Fighting!

My goals for 2019

I'd improve my piano and guitar skills. Maybe in the future, I can write an inspiring song for everyone!

Performance Evaluation

Last week, Alyana and I performed 'The Only Exception' in front of the class and Mrs Beer. Actually, Alyana suggested the song to me and I thought it's fine because I kinda know the song. We had lots of options to choose from and we ended up with this song that was not on the list. Because I'm not familiar with the song very well, Alyana helped me a lot (thanks for your patience) to play the acoustic guitar while singing. The lyrics are telling a story wherein some parts I can relate to. This song made me get out of my comfort zone, by trying a bass guitar (of course with Alyana's help), and also using a capo for the first time :) Though our performance is not perfectly fine, I'm happy with it because we finally finished our last assessment; the audience liked it; and lastly, I made myself proud!

If we could perform again, we could change the bass guitar into an acoustic bass guitar to match with my acoustic guitar. And more practice, seriously. But overall, I'm happy with it. Thanks to Mrs Beer <3

Reflection

Alyana and I knew a lot more things as of today. For example, Puerto Vallarta, the most affected city, is located in Jalisco. Now, we are confident that our area of research is right. The aftermaths and responses are now revealed to us. Next week, we are going to practice presenting this. Over the weekend, we are going to justify and redo our paragraphs.

Reflection

I finished the writing the paragraph about the natural impacts of Hurricane Patricia on the Southwestern Pacific Coast of Mexico. It's quite difficult to research about this because though it's the strongest recorded hurricane ever it DIDN"T cause that much harm. After 24 hours of landfall, it quickly dies off as it encountered the mountainous terrain of Mexico.

Geology

The Rock Cycle

What makes a home earthquake proof?

Your house structure should be cross-braced (reinforced walls using two steel beams), shear walls (concrete walls with beams through), this reduces the rocking movement, and shock absorbers at the foundation (isolation base).

Aim: What makes a home earthquake proof?
Equipment:
  • 4 pieces of paper
  • 4 cotton buds
  • 6 thin sticks
  • 3 small + 1 large cork
  • 2 foam plastics
  • scissors + tape
Was it successful? Why? Why not?

Our candy house made it to second place. It is somehow earthquake proof compare to others. As I have observed, our base/foundation made our house prevent sliding off. Other's houses easily slides off because of the smooth paper underneath.

What do architects do to make super tall buildings safe?

They have to use thicker walls and and beams to support the tall building. The foundation of the building is really important, it helps stabilize the height and weight of any type of buildings. Bill Baker, the architect of Dubai's Burj Khalifa-the tallest skyscraper- said that the structure of the building should confuse the wind (Winds creates vortices when it hit buildings). They also used dampers (shock absorbers) to prevent shaking and earthquake.

Reflection

Today, I learnt that Hurricane Patricia didn't affect the populated areas in Mexico that much. Hurricane Patricia caused widespread mudslides, flooding, power outages on the unpopulated location. Storm Surge has also occurred. Puerto Vallarta and Manzanillo are the most affected cities.

Class with Mr. Langley in Social Studies

Mr. Langley, an English Language teacher, came to our class today. Excitingly, he taught us how to form sentences really great. It helped a lot. Whereas these skills are hard to learn, it can become our habit to do this.

Reflection Blog in Research Extreme Natural Events

Finally, I now used my researched notes for our paragraphs. It is amazing to know that Hurricane Patricia was formed by the two systems of disturbance merged together. At the moment, help isn't needed. We're doing well as a partner. I can improve by helping my partner on her assigned work, too to have better work together.

Reflection Blog in Research Extreme Natural Events

I finished off my first paragraph today explaining how Hurricane Patricia is formed. From my perspective, we're quite doing well and some things are beginning to be crystal clear to me. Nothing didn't go well today. I'm gonna write my other paragraphs in the next lesson.

Reflection Blog in Research Extreme Natural Events

I read sites and watched news about Hurrican Patricia. I wrote notes for me to make it easier to write the paragraphs later on explaining how this monster hurricane formed. I learned a lot for our research.

So far, I'm doing well researching.

The sites I've read only showed minimal information about the formation of Hurrican Patricia but on the other hand, it gave me other things I need to know about, too.

For the next lesson, I think I should narrow my google search with specific questions or topics to quickly and briefly make my notes for my paragraph.

Breaking Copyright To Download Music is a Crime

Breaking Copyright To Download Music Is Not Really A Crime

Related image

Stealing is a crime so why downloading a copyright music is not? Taking songs online is a violation against the ownership copyrights. It is an illegal act and shows disrespect to the right owners of the music.

Stealing the songs of other people at any label is considered an infringement, especially when you don’t acknowledge the possessors' right. For example, picking up a dollar you found, printing something from a book or just taking something you do not own is still called stealing no matter how small or big it is. Illegally, you have stolen these pop songs without realising that you are already committing a crime.

While carrying out a crime of piracy, it also displays a disrespectful behaviour. You do not value the authority and rights of the artists and producers. For instance, the composer holds a deep feeling for that song and they’ve put so much effort to produce a good quality music but a person like you just downloaded it from the internet.

Violating the copyrights law and showing disrespect makes downloading music from the internet illegal. These beautiful creations of melodies and lyrics are what they do for a living and actually their own personal emotions, too. We all just tend to download their music that makes as a criminal without respect.

Volcano Research

What is a VOLCANO? How does it Form?

Image result for lava disney

A volcano is a geological rupture in the Earth's crust triggered by natural forces, such as pressure and temperature in the interior of the Earth. These forces drive gases and hot liquid, known as magma, out through a volcano's orifice known as the vent. Once out of the vent, magma is now called lava, these erupted materials break down, harden or condense around a volcano's vent. Over thousands or millions of years, the accumulation of magma forms steep-sided cones known as volcanoes. Volcanoes have been erupting molten material, after the formation of the earth, due to the accumulated pressure in the interior of the planet. The formation of volcanoes has contributed to the shaping and configuration of the varied landscapes that make up the planet.

Basically, A volcano is a type of mountain that is created when some of that magma travels up through the plates to the earth's surface.

Volcanoes are most commonly formed at the convergence or divergence of tectonic plates.

Mount FUJI

Related imageWhen did Mount Fuji last erupt?
16 December 1707

Mount Fuji (Actually two volcanoes know as "Old Fuji" and "Young Fuji") has erupted for more than 100,000 years. It is the highest mountain in Japan, the 2nd highest peak of an island (volcano) in Asia, and 7th in the World. Mount Fuji is dormant stratovolcano - also known as a composite volcano, is a conical volcano built up by many layers (strata) of hardened lava, tephra, pumice, and ash.

Destruction

Mount Fuji's last eruption ejected tons of TEPHRA (all solid volcanic materials --not lava or gas) into the atmosphere. The 1707 eruption, called the Hoei eruption. The tephra was so thick that the people of the city of Edo (Tokyo) had to use candles in the middle of the day.

Many people lose their lives as a consequence of Mount Fuji's volcanic activity. Damage to nearby homes and the tephra fallout reduced agricultural productivity in the region, causing many people to starve.
      Facts and Trivia about VOLCANOES

A volcano is a mountain that opens downward to a pool of molten rock below the surface of the earth. When pressure builds up, eruptions occur.
  • In an eruption, gases and rock shoot up through the opening and spill over or fill the air with lava fragments. Eruptions can cause lava flows, hot ash flows, mudslides, avalanches, falling ash and floods.
  • The danger area around a volcano covers about a 20-mile radius. Fresh volcanic ash, made of pulverized rock, can be harsh, acidic, gritty, glassy and smelly. The ash can cause damage to the lungs of older people, babies and people with respiratory problems.
  • Volcanic lightning occurs mostly within the cloud of ash during an eruption and is created by the friction of the ash rushing to the surface. Roughly 200 accounts of this lightning have been witnessed live.
  • An erupting volcano can trigger tsunamis, flash floods, earthquakes, mudflows and rockfalls.
  • More than 80% of the earth's surface is volcanic in origin. The sea floor and some mountains were formed by countless volcanic eruptions. Gaseous emissions from the volcano formed the earth's atmosphere.
  • There are more than 500 active volcanoes in the world. More than half of these volcanoes are part of the "Ring of Fire," a region that encircles the Pacific Ocean
  • Active volcanoes in the U.S. are found mainly in Hawaii, Alaska, California, Oregon and Washington, but the greatest chance of eruptions near areas where many people live is in Hawaii and Alaska.
  • The sound of an eruption volcano can be quiet and hissing or explosive and booming. The loud cracks travel hundreds of miles and do the most damage, including hearing loss and broken glass.
  • The most deadly eruptions have occurred in Indonesia, with tens of thousands of lives lost to starvation, tsunami (as a result of the eruption), ash flows, and mudflows.

Particle Theory of Matter - Convection

Observing Convection I

Aim: TO observe convection in a liquid.

Equipment:
200 mL beaker, water, tweezers, a crystal of potassium
permanganate, a drinking straw, Bunsen Burner, heat mat, tripod and gauze mat.

Method:

  1. 1. Set up a Bunsen Burner on a heatproof mat. Put the gauze mat on the tripod but leave it just one side of the Bunsen burner.
  2.  Fill a 200 mL beaker with 150 mL of cold water.
  3. Place the beaker on top of the tripod and gauze and allow it to settle for a few minutes.
  4. CArefully insert a drinking straw down one side of the beaker, ensuring the straw down one side of the beaker. Be careful as you do not want to disturb the water too much.
  5. Using tweezer, drop a crystal of potassium permanganate down the inside of the straw. Wait for the crystal to settle on the bottom of the beaker.
  6.  Very gently, remove the straw.
  7. Light the Bunsen and slide it under the tripod so that you are only heating the outside of the beaker where the crystal is. Observe.

Observations:

The heat is transferred to the water through the glass, that causes the crystal to heat up also making its molecules to spread. The water turned into purple because of the heated permanganate crystal molecules spread in the water.

Observing Convection II

Aim: TO observe convection in a gas.

Equipment:

Scissors, paper spiral pattern, string, a source of heat (boiling water, radiator, etc)

1. Cut out the spiral pattern below, carefully following the dashed line.
2. Tie a length of cotton through the hole on the top of the spiral.
3. Hold the spiral 30-40cm above a heat source.
4. Observe.

Observations:

Class Persuasive Writing: Hornby High students Should Be Able to Leave School to Get Their Own Food

Hornby High Students Should Be Able to Leave School to Get Their Own Food

What did I learn?
Writing a persuasive writing is easy with a diverse vocabulary and understanding of your topic but at the same time, it is tricky. We often get lost on the track. Using SEXY paragraphs is a great help to be consistent. As a class, I get to understand more the use of SEXY paragraphs while looking at both sides.

Why did we do it as a class?
One of the greatest ability we should have is writing and arguing our opinions in English. Different voices can be heard if a persuasive writing is done as a class. Together, we develop these skills willingly especially the topic involves students.

What will I do better next time?
Everyone's opinions matter in this category. One or majority, it all still matters. There are some parts in which I disagree with. Like using a word multiple times, and not sharing my ideas and suggestions. On the other hand, even though I am against it I should still fully participate, not for the topic but for my learning.

What questions do I still have?
  • Shouldn't we consider that almost half of the students today are not responsible enough?
  • Why go out of school to buy food when we have our own cafe at school?
  • What if they go for this topic just for their own benefit? Like going out to the mall and bunk.

Persuasive Writing: Dogs Are More Superior Than Cats

Dogs Are More Superior Than Cats
Image result for dogs and cats

Every family’s pet is commonly a dog or a cat. They’re a member of the family that brings such great happiness to everyone. Dogs and cats are not just pets. Everyone should love them in a way we love people, too. Some people are indecisive about which to have. A loud wiggly-dog or a lazy fat-cat?

Protecting isn’t just a dog’s duty. Dogs are trustworthy and loving. As an animal, they can understand human feelings that also affects their emotion. Barking at night is not a disruption, it is they’re way of threatening dangers around. Loud dog barks scare bad people sneaking at night. They can also sense evil spirits that is why they bark but you see nothing outside. Describing dogs as happy pills make sense. They relieve stress and anxiety. Seeing them wiggling their tail makes us smile. Exercising with your dog makes the both of you physically fit, too. For instance, walking in the morning to get some sunlight and fresh air. A dog can be our buddy whenever it’s just they can’t talk to us.

Cats are fluffy balls! We can’t just see them do something useful. Eat, drink, sleep- a cat’s daily routine. Did you know that in the past, Egyptians used to worship cats? Until now, they act as majesty and rule the house. But their fluffy fur, cute eyes and sound soothes our feelings. Acting weird is their talent, sometimes they are a dog biting us, a bird flying in the kitchen, a kangaroo jumping so high when they’re surprised. Cats love playing sleeping on boxes instead of the expensive sleeping bed you bought. Like dogs, they can scare away unfortunates. Lazy people will be a great partner with cats.

Comparing them will not help anything as they are both beneficial and loving in their own way. In terms of sizes, dogs can be seen as more superior than cats, we are sure that they can protect us. Cats are just cute and lazy. But let's all admit that cats are bossier as we do all sort of things for them.

Hornby: Lovely Art Larceny

Hornby: Lovely Art Larceny

Lovely, the artist, made her own linocut self-portrait this year. The piece was displayed in an exclusive exhibition on August 25 then a remarkable explosion happened. Guests were quickly evacuated but the authorities couldn't find the 'Lovely Art'!

  • Her fierce can be clearly seen on the portrait facing towards.
  • Slightly tilted head and long down hair.
  • The head almost occupied all the space but a bright background is left.
  • Shadowing and tones are done very well and emphasised making it a closed-full head portrait.
  • The half side of the face is brighter and the other side is darker. Particularly bright cheeks, forehead and chin.
  • Lines were also made around the eyes and nose.

Creative Writing: Arriving in Paradise

From Pit to a Paradise

A new day has started again in London, it is already 1850 and my life hasn’t changed even for a bit, I am just growing up and doing more works. I learned how to live independently as a teen as mother and father died because of a disease in which I don’t know how or why, we lack in education, all I know is they are working very hard for us. I live in a place, like a sardine can, overcrowded, narrow, dirty, slippery, dark streets, we are not getting enough sunlight nor fresh air as the houses are built together side by side and in parallel. Houses don't have windows, furniture, and anything very much. People are not getting clean water for bath, no toilets and wastes go down the street, London in this century I say has a really poor hygiene, good thing I'm a girl with a not so bad immune system. I'm grateful for having a good boss, sometimes, "what a fortunate girl", they say. Though I have a slightly better life, I find ways of saving everything, one drop of water, crumbs of bread, time, etc.

It is sunset, a beautiful sky has appeared by people are not in their homes, children are not playing outside, we are all in factories, working. Sunset doesn't symbolise ending for us. I work as a maid, cleaning my boss' house, sewing, cooking, and they also send me to their factory twice a week.

Moonlight shines, stars twinkling above, is not what you can see in London. Instead, a pitch dark sky, I heard someone call it pollution, I don't know. It's a cold windy night, a paper has appeared before me and hit my face. I went to a place where there's a little light, though I can't read what it says I still can see the picture, it has P-A-R-A-D-I-S-E, it looks amazing for me, a nice scenery picture, at the bottom it says 'ship', I can read that one, dawn morning, and $15. I knew these word because my boss taught me to come to work every day at dawn morning. I felt some kind of weird feeling inside me, I want to go to this place. I have a money for the ship but I decided to just go next year and save more money as I can.

I always check the pier if there's a ship going to the place I saw on the poster, I asked them about the place and I learned that many people have already gone to New Zealand.

It is 1851, London is still the same. I packed my things, just a few, I gave a farewell to my boss and let me go, she even gave me a gift, a beautiful dress. I'm a cabin passenger, I saved enough money to pay for it and even have some leftovers. I saw the steerage passengers and felt horrible, I get to eat nice meals such as steak, soups and milk, while they can only get some biscuits, preserved foods and crowded sleeping place. I got rid of this thought by reading my favourite book, a gift from my mother. Once, I talked to my friends in the steerage and caught a cold from them, luckily the ship has medicines. We have been in the sea for so long, it took 106 days before we arrived in New Zealand.

The day has finally come, a beautiful sea greeted us, I can see that the houses were distant, few people walking, children running along, peaceful, fresh air, and friendly local people. I decided to settle in the North Island. I became an assistant and cleaner in a meat shop with nice pay and fair treatment. No prejudice or exploitation is happening around. I live in a house with other 3 people to pay less for the rental, but at least I have my own room with walls, doors and windows. New Zealand is such a clean place compared back in London. They also have toilets, bathrooms and running water. After 5 years of working, I finally adapted to this new place completely. Then, a miracle has occurred, a programme offered me a scholarship to study. To support my other expenses, I also had to work on a farm, and as an assistant cook in a small eatery.

1884, I graduated from the academy and got a better full-time job as a writer for Publishing Company Ltd. and as a supervisor.  After 5 years, I started my own business, a small unknown clothing boutique in the alley. My first year is stagnant, it started to progress after 2 years. Within these years, I had a teenage boy from an orphanage. My life has changed, getting old and living my life happily. I did not regret my choice of coming to this paradise.

Persuasive Writing: Having Friends is More Important Than Having Money

No Man is an Island

Image result for money or friends
Would you abandon your friend for 1M dollars? ‘Happiness can’t be paid with money’ is a lie, everyone becomes happy when you get your pay, or when buy something you want for a long time makes you really happy. But friends bring happiness for free, just give your time, love and care for each other, the laughter and tears you shared together cannot is priceless.
Having lots of money is useless when you are alone. You need someone, a friend, to enjoy it with. For instance, eating in a restaurant, having lunch alone is boring and doesn’t give any excitement at all but, when you enjoyed it with a friend, you get to talk about the food and everything. Try eating alone today for lunch in school or work and compare it the next day you eat with your friends, it more enjoyable to eat a cheap food with them than eating alone in an expensive restaurant.
A friend is free, money is not. We can earn a friend with trust and being real, money can be gained by working for something. For example, two people were strangers but they started talking the next day, they became close and each now has a new friend, money can’t talk nor hear, though money can make us happy, it also causes anxiety and problems. A businessman is a busy person with lots of money, he can’t sleep properly thinking about financial issues and progress. A group of people having sleepovers, walking together and talking about their problems reduces their anxiety and depression, they have time to eat and laugh. A friend is not a money in which you will use for your own good but a mutual relationship, always there for each other. We can lose friends or money in an instant. Breaking each other’s trust, or spending too much. In our every action there is a reaction, the consequences, so we need to think or our life will sink. Most people today are spending their time earning money for a living if we focus on earning we will run out of time for spending and relaxing. Don’t waste your time in this world earning money. Have some fun with your friends, at least once a week. Remember, wasting time is worse than wasting money.

Composition Techniques

Composing different types of music is what we are currently doing in Music this term. I have learned about identifying genres, instruments, tempo, dynamics and other elements of music. Music is used for advertising, films, or just a song. So far, we created a short piece of songs for films, Christmas and advertisements.

Arranging the tempo is my favourite one, the emotion of music relates to the tempo. If it's fast, it gives an exciting, happy or amazing feeling. If it's slow, it is more like a sad, thrilling, and anxious piece. I love creating music for films, music creates the mood and attracts the viewers, it makes the film more memorable. Christmas jingles are more like a happy and exciting piece, the audience should feel the excitement of Christmas and make them dance to the song.

I might try making my own style of music for my assessment wherein it will show the composer's feelings and story or thoughts.

School is The Best Place to Make Mistakes

Are you perfect? School is where we learn new things and keep on learning, developing and improving. You might have done something for the first time and by chance, you get it perfectly, but we wouldn't want to live by chance only, right? Before we do something perfectly, we have already done a lot of mistakes, many lose, and misses.

We can't learn how to read if we don't actually read. Reading enhances our vocabulary and shapes our creative minds. For instance, you've read an unfamiliar word and you don't have any idea how to pronounce it, then you said it the wrong way. But remember, it is not the end of the world, you have to options, be discouraged or learn the proper pronunciation.

Students tend to do easier work than the difficult one. For example, taking a math exam, most students will choose the easier level than a harder one because who wants to suffer in maths when you have choices? These students want to get a good score instead of taking the challenge of examining how far they can get up to. My teacher once said that taking a challenging exam and have a couple of mistakes will improve you more than an easy test and have a perfect score. What can 1+1=2 help your learning?

A 10-month-old baby doesn't know how to walk at first, but parents are there to guide the child. He stumbles and fell many times but as he continues to stand up and start taking a step again, the child can now run. Teachers serve as our second parents in school, they help our learning no matter how many times we fail. For example, writing your own name in the primary, you misspelt it or wrote the letter 's' the other way round but, we still hold our pencils and start over and over again until we finally got it right. As a kid, we developed the skill of not giving up. Good thing I didn't get discouraged when I have a piece of paper full of misspelt messy-looking handwritten names.

School is a stair where we start from the very bottom, taking our first little steps. It's a relief we didn't end up staying in the bottom, we learned how to take bigger steps even though we always fall. Do not be afraid of making something wrong. We need to excel, get out of your comfort zone and take risks. Learning is not begging us to be perfect. Cause if you really want to learn, learn how to make and accept your own mistakes.

CARR Licences

CARR Licences? Does it make sense? What is this for?

Well, you can think of it like driver's licence, almost close, but it's definitely free!  Yes, free of charge, HOWEVER, an effort is the pay for it.

Wind Racers Sail

Aim: To build the fastest wind racer out of the supplied materials.

Equipment:
trolley, cardboard, tape, paper, string, metal rod, and scissors

Research:

Remember:
An object in motions stays in motion unless acted upon by an outside force
Every action has an equal and opposite reaction

Physics of Sailing

  • Apparent Wind-the wind you feel on your face as you move forward

  • True wind is the wind blowing naturally

Related image
If you were to ride your bike on a day when there is was a 5 mi/hr behind you and you were pedalling at 5 mi/hr, the two winds would cancel each other and you wouldn't feel any wind at all.

There is a positive force against the inside of the sail, and the negative force pulling the outside of the sail.

The air moving across the sails, like air moving across an aeroplane wing, creates a force called the lift. A small amount of this force aims aft and actually pushes the boat forward and some of the force is lost due to friction as it moves over the sail.

Watch this interesting video that will blow your mind!!

Method:

(our design)

1. Measure the parts of your trolley and draw the body parts/design of your vehicle on a piece of cardboard. Make sure that it matches correctly.

2. Cut it out using scissors. You can use a cutter, it will make your life easier.

3.  Cut out 2 pieces of triangle sails, make it big enough for your trolley. Design it first beforehand (only if you want to).

4. Attach the sail to the trolley. Make the sail slightly curved, not straight, so that it will be easier for the wind to act forcefully on its surface. The angle of the sail should be 70-80 degrees.

5. Secure the parts with tape if necessary.

Results:

Our wind racer came pretty well at racing, ours is the last wind racer standing, the rest of the groups' wind racers fell so we have this an achievement tho we didn't come first.

Our DU30 vessel had a distance of 5 metres with the time of 12 seconds (remember that these are my estimated calculations of distance and time). It starts to decelerate after 9 seconds without the wind blower. Therefore, this wind racer has a speed of 0.41 m/s-1.

The Snowman and the Snowdog

This is a short animated movie clip without any dialogue, all you can hear are orchestra-like instruments, more of string and aero-instruments. This film shows a lot of emotions to the audience and the music contributed a lot by setting the mood and drawing the emotions and feelings.

I still did understand the story without dialogue because I saw what happened in the video. The music impacted the emotions and feelings of the viewers. For example, in sad moments, the instruments played slower and in high-pitch, the violin holds the note for a long time to draw it to the hearts of the audience. In happy and exciting moments, the instruments play in a fast beat, imitating a heartbeat when one is happy!

I enjoyed the flying scene a lot, especially when the second voices started to sing, it should be a happy scene but for a particular reason, it made my heart ache it almost made me cry for some time.

Watch the clip yourself and share what you think on the comment box below.

Modal Verb Practice - Term 3

Image result for term 3

Term 3 has started and there are lots of things to do. If I want to improve or change myself unlike from the previous terms. I want my rest of the months this year to be productive and realistic. I have to make plans first or list it into small parts so that It won't be boring and lazy to do. These past few nights I said to myself that sleeping earlier than 9:30 p.m. is a must! So far so good. I need to sleep early to wake up early, right? I should also interact in class more this term. Maybe I could read more books than I did before to increase and expand my vocabulary. There's a really big possibility that I might do more things than what I have said in here, so I wish the best for myself!

William Shakespeare No. 4

Here is my #4 Digital Learning Object in English about William Shakespeare in preparation for the next topic which is the Merchant of Venice, one of his many plays.

I'm starting to like MySimpleShow in terms of doing my DLOs. So as usual, I made it in a paragraph way without putting the 10 questions and then answering! I hope you are learning with me, Thank you!

My Wonders:

Why did Romeo and Juliet commit suicide?
How much is a pound of flesh in the Elizabethan in Shakespeare's time?

Watching Television is making New Zealand an Unhealthy Nation?

We are using a google drawing template to look beyond the topic statement about watching television in New Zealand on both sides, cons and pros, to develop and maintain our skills in writing and reasoning.

Gladiator

Roman Gladiator

Gladiator matches happen at the Colosseum (below) in the Roman ancient times. Gladiator or simple as swordsman comes from the Latin word "gladius" meaning 'sword'. They are mostly slaves from wars fighting with gladiators or wild animals like bulls and tigers. If they win many fights they can be granted freedom but gladiators always get a brutal death.

Here's a sample advertisement I made for Gladiator matches using Roman Numerals and inserting different events that you can see.

Did you know that there are also women gladiators called gladiatrices or Amazons?

Cave Art

Cave Art

What am I learning?

Cave Art is a bridge between today and in the past. Cave Arts show us how people in the past history lived and survived. We can see the types of tools they used to hunt, what food they eat and how it looks like. Cave Art is like paintings in an exhibit in a less fancy way. I also learned how to actually imitate cave arts with my class in Social Studies.

How does this work show my learning?

By learning and seeing cave art stuff, we made our own cave art-like on a sandpaper. I knew how to do it and the purpose of doing it.

What am I wondering?

Now I wonder how they came up with the idea of doing cave art and the colours they used...

How can I use this learning?

I might use this if I ever visited a preserved Cave Art like the Petroglyphs in the Philippines or to just have an idea about the living in the past and how it differs now.

This is what our class did in Social Studies imitating cave art.

Curiosity: Why Do We Cry? and How?

Image result for why we cry
Have you ever wondered why we cry, exactly? Our eyes have this salty chock fluid full of protein, water, and mucus and oil released from the lacrimal gland in the upper, outer region of your eyes. This fluid is better known as tears.

There are three types of tears for different purposes:

1. Basal Tears are omnipresent in our eyes. These constant tears keep our eyes from drying out. The human body produces an average of 5-10 ounce of tears each day. They drain in our nasal cavity, which is the reason why many of us develop a runny-nose after a good sobfest.

2. Reflex tears protect our eyes from harsh irritants such as smoke, onions, dusty wind, etc. The sensory nerves in your cornea deliver this irritation to your brain stem, which in turn send hormones in the eyelids. These hormones cause the eyes to produce tears, effectively ridding the irritation off.

3. Emotional tears. It starts in the cerebrum where sadness is registered. The endocrine system is then triggered to release hormones to the ocular area, which then causes tears to form. Emotional tears are common among people who see Bambi's mother die or who suffer personal losses.

TRIVIA: In Japan, some people have taken the notion of "a good cry" to the next level. They hold organized crying clubs where they watch sad movies and television shows and read tear-inducing books.

Egyptian Medicine

Egyptian Medicine

Egyptian Medicine is one of the oldest ancient document in the history of discoveries. Their medical practice includes locating of bones, minimally invasive surgeries, dentistry and an immense set of pharmacopoeia. As an example, Egyptians discovered how to treat diseases and make their own drugs written on a papyrus. I thought that pharmacopoeia (meaning, drug-making) is where the word pharmacy came from. They easily identify and treat injuries, unlike diseases which are more complicated.  Their discoveries are a great help in today's science, and with technology nowadays medical practices are improving and more illness are curable.

Making Circuits

Aim: Make the bulb light and compare the brightnesses between 3 kinds of circuit

Equipment: Wires (alligator clip), bulbs, battery

Diagrams of circuits used:

                                            Circuit 1                                              Circuit 2

      Circuit 3

1. The first circuit has a brighter light than the second series circuit because it has only one load that receives all the electrons. The second circuit has 2 loads that mean they share the voltage.

2. The third circuit is brighter because the flow of electrons around the circuit only passes one bulb in every path.

3. The first and third circuit has almost the same brightness.

Curiosity: How Humans Benefit From Pets

How Humans Benefit from Pets?

Have you ever noticed that you feel better when you're around with your pet? It's true. Your pets help you improve your mood. Spending a quality time your pet dog or cat or any other animals can have a positive impact on your health and wellbeing. They are the best stress relievers, just sitting down, walking, playing and even sleeping with your pet helps you get better than doing these things alone.

According to a research, people who own dogs or pets are less likely to have a heart disease than to those who are non-owners. Walking with a dog in a park is like a social magnet, people tend to ask if they can pet your dog and start talking to you. Petting your cat or dog feels good. It can also lower your blood pressure, helps your body release a relaxation hormone, and cuts down on levels of a stress hormone.

A pet is not just your companion but consider them as your family, too. Don't forget to feed and bath them, always clean the litter box and play with them because they can also have depressions so as we do.

Performance Evaluation

Aotearoa

1. Were you happy with your performance? Why? Describe?

YES! Cause I know to myself that we all enjoyed the song and that we received a big applause from the audience.

2. How did you feel performing in front of an audience? Explain!

A bit nervous but feels so good. Performing in a small crowd made me tremble though I'm used in performing in front of many people, at first  I felt like I'm going to ruin the stage and everything but when I started singing and playing the piano I felt the excitement and just go with the melody of the song.

3. What was your final grade and were you happy with?

Excellence- and yes I'm very happy with it but I have this kind of feeling that our performance should be in the middle of merit and excellence cause we're not that very good but not so bad also.

4. How could you have improved your performance?

We might communicate more as a group and share our ideas to improve our performance. We should also build more confidence as a group and encourage each other.

Curiosity: How to Get and Stay Motivated

A lot of people today are wondering how come some people can do more and better things than them, what kind of sorcery they do to stay motivated and inspired by getting things done.

Image result for motivation

I, as a student who's aiming for a really high mountain, also needs to manage my time properly and well balanced. Procrastinating is a bad friend of mine, staying away from it is so simple but difficult though. However, once you know this trick, you'll be more productive!

Image result for motivation

Get things started!

Some of you might have journal or to do list but remaining as papers and no results. It's because, you know what things you need to do but don't know how to start or not motivated to do it. For example, waking up in the morning, you know i your mind that you have loads of work to do and need to wake up now but choosing to sleep for more minutes that will turn into hours.

In order to achieve something start waking up earlier than you do. Don't think of the things you need to do in the morning because this will decrease your motivation to do it! Break your to do list into simple stuffs.

According to Newton's First Law of Motion could also be Newton's Law of Productivity.

An object either remains at rest or continues to move at a constant velocity, unless acted upon by an external force. (i.e. Objects in motion tend to stay in motion. Objects at rest tend to stay at rest.)

So, once you've started it, it is much easier to continue going on! Motivation is often the result of action, not the cause of it. Getting started, even in very small ways, is a form of active inspiration that naturally produces momentum. Once a task has begun, it is easier to continue moving it forward.

Stop waiting for motivation and inspiration to come to you, they will never come! This is the difference between professionals and amateurs. Professionals make schedules and stick to it rather than doing things when motivation only strikes. Are you a professional or an amateur?

How to stay motivated?

Image result for motivation

Create a ritual! A simple routine you can do for 5 minutes can lead you to your goals! For example, going for an exercise, start by washing your face and putting on your shoes. Once these simple things are done, things will be easier to do and continue towards it rather than laying in bed and complain about the whole day.

Motivation is often the result, not the cause. You'll get motivated by the results you had and get the habit of doing it for more results! So you cant get motivated by doing NOTHING!

Image result for motivation

If you can do it for 2-5 minutes, then do it NOW! Don't wait for tomorrow or later.
