Geology

The Rock Cycle

What makes a home earthquake proof?

Your house structure should be cross-braced (reinforced walls using two steel beams), shear walls (concrete walls with beams through), this reduces the rocking movement, and shock absorbers at the foundation (isolation base).

Aim: What makes a home earthquake proof?
Equipment:
  • 4 pieces of paper
  • 4 cotton buds
  • 6 thin sticks
  • 3 small + 1 large cork
  • 2 foam plastics
  • scissors + tape
Was it successful? Why? Why not?

Our candy house made it to second place. It is somehow earthquake proof compare to others. As I have observed, our base/foundation made our house prevent sliding off. Other's houses easily slides off because of the smooth paper underneath.

What do architects do to make super tall buildings safe?

They have to use thicker walls and and beams to support the tall building. The foundation of the building is really important, it helps stabilize the height and weight of any type of buildings. Bill Baker, the architect of Dubai's Burj Khalifa-the tallest skyscraper- said that the structure of the building should confuse the wind (Winds creates vortices when it hit buildings). They also used dampers (shock absorbers) to prevent shaking and earthquake.

Reflection

Today, I learnt that Hurricane Patricia didn't affect the populated areas in Mexico that much. Hurricane Patricia caused widespread mudslides, flooding, power outages on the unpopulated location. Storm Surge has also occurred. Puerto Vallarta and Manzanillo are the most affected cities.

Class with Mr. Langley in Social Studies

Mr. Langley, an English Language teacher, came to our class today. Excitingly, he taught us how to form sentences really great. It helped a lot. Whereas these skills are hard to learn, it can become our habit to do this.

Reflection Blog in Research Extreme Natural Events

Finally, I now used my researched notes for our paragraphs. It is amazing to know that Hurricane Patricia was formed by the two systems of disturbance merged together. At the moment, help isn't needed. We're doing well as a partner. I can improve by helping my partner on her assigned work, too to have better work together.

Reflection Blog in Research Extreme Natural Events

I finished off my first paragraph today explaining how Hurricane Patricia is formed. From my perspective, we're quite doing well and some things are beginning to be crystal clear to me. Nothing didn't go well today. I'm gonna write my other paragraphs in the next lesson.

Reflection Blog in Research Extreme Natural Events

I read sites and watched news about Hurrican Patricia. I wrote notes for me to make it easier to write the paragraphs later on explaining how this monster hurricane formed. I learned a lot for our research.

So far, I'm doing well researching.

The sites I've read only showed minimal information about the formation of Hurrican Patricia but on the other hand, it gave me other things I need to know about, too.

For the next lesson, I think I should narrow my google search with specific questions or topics to quickly and briefly make my notes for my paragraph.

Breaking Copyright To Download Music is a Crime

Breaking Copyright To Download Music Is Not Really A Crime

Stealing is a crime so why downloading a copyright music is not? Taking songs online is a violation against the ownership copyrights. It is an illegal act and shows disrespect to the right owners of the music.

Stealing the songs of other people at any label is considered an infringement, especially when you don’t acknowledge the possessors' right. For example, picking up a dollar you found, printing something from a book or just taking something you do not own is still called stealing no matter how small or big it is. Illegally, you have stolen these pop songs without realising that you are already committing a crime.

While carrying out a crime of piracy, it also displays a disrespectful behaviour. You do not value the authority and rights of the artists and producers. For instance, the composer holds a deep feeling for that song and they’ve put so much effort to produce a good quality music but a person like you just downloaded it from the internet.

Violating the copyrights law and showing disrespect makes downloading music from the internet illegal. These beautiful creations of melodies and lyrics are what they do for a living and actually their own personal emotions, too. We all just tend to download their music that makes as a criminal without respect.
